*Please note not all of these skills are expected when your child comes to 2nd grade. These are skills that will be worked on and developed in the Fall.
Foundational Skills:
- Know how to read and write words using correct short vowel and long vowel patterns
- Can figure out 2 syllable words by using what they know about vowels
- Can read words with common prefixes and suffixes like: unhappy, preview, misplace, meaningful biggest
Literature:
- Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding with both listening to and reading stories
- Can identify story elements (character, setting & plot) and explain how a character's actions effect the events in the story
- Can use information in illustrations to demonstrate understanding
- Can join in conversations about stories, retell stories and make up their own stories
Informational Text (Non-Fiction):
- Identify the main topic
- Can use context clues (words in the text) to determine meaning of unknown words
- Use key text features (title, table of contents, index, etc.) to locate key facts
- Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
Writing:
- Write narratives in which they recount a well elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
