*Please note not all of these skills are expected when your child comes to 1st Grade. These are skills that will be worked on and developed in the Fall.
Foundational Skills:
- Knows the features of a sentence: begins with a capital letter, space between the words, has punctuation at the end
- Understands spoken words, syllables and sounds
- Hear and say words that rhyme
- Can tell the difference between a long vowel and a short vowel - cat - Cate
- Can separate sounds in words like: /c/-/a/- /t/ and hear sounds and produce the word
Literature:
- Can retell stories using important story elements such as: characters, setting, and major events
- Knows the different kinds of texts like: fiction, informational, poems, etc.
- Can describe who is telling the story at different times in a text
Informational Text (Non-Fiction):
- Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.
- Know labels are used to describe things in an illustration or picture
- Know what the cover, title, title page, table of contents and index are
- Participate in conversations about informational text with their teachers and peers
Writing:
- Write a sentence
- Write a Question
- Write an Exclamation
