*Please note not all of these skills are expected when your child comes to Kindergarten. These are skills that will be worked on and developed in the Fall.
Foundational Skills:
- Knows all the capital (uppercase) letters in the alphabet and most of their sounds
- Can say two words that rhyme and recognize rhyming words when they hear them
- Can hear, *segment & blend syllables
- Knows the difference between letters and words
- Know the five vowels: a,e,i,o,u
- Can write their name (all capital is developmentally appropriate at this stage)
- Can use 5-6 word sentences when speaking, ask/answer questions, follow multiple step directions
- Knows prepositional words such as: up, under, on, below, beside, behind, etc.
- Can act out verbs with similar meanings such as: walk, strut, march
Literature:
- Begin learning high-frequency words such as: I, we, can, the, of, she, my, is are, do, does
- Can sit and listen to stories
- Can ask and answer questions about stories they hear
- Can join in conversations about stories, retell stories and make up their own stories
- Will begin to recognize the author and illustrator and what their job is
Informational Text (Non-Fiction):
- Begin having conversations about using key details to identify the main topic
- Can ask questions about unknown words
- Begin identifying the cover, title, title page, table of contents and index
- Participate in conversations about informational text with their teachers and peers
Writing:
- Write name
- Write some capital letters
- Draw pictures to tell stories and express their opinions
*segment/blend: to segment means to break apart like in the word table- you would say /tā/ - /ble/. When you blend (put it back together) table - you would say table.
